If you have a mat at home that could make your time learning a little better and easier, but if you don’t that is also okay.

The reason that Jiu-Jitsu is successful is it was developed so smaller people can defeat larger opponents without none or little injury.

Let’s say you are in an altercation with someone who is bigger or stronger than you, just throwing punches may not work to knock them out.

Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground fighting techniques that can help you to defeat anyone much bigger or stronger.

If you do not have anyone to practice martial arts with you at home, basic boxing is a great way to learn by yourself from home.

Boxing can be really useful and really helps you learn how strong and agile you can really be.

All you need to do is purchase some boxing gloves although, you can honestly still practice boxing without the boxing gloves.

The first important thing to learn when boxing is your fighting stance.

When you are in your fighting stance, you want to have your knees bent, your dominant hand in the rear, elbows in, hands up, and chin tucked.

If you don’t do the fighting stance correctly, the rest of the techniques are going to be harder to learn. The fighting stance is the base for boxing. This is where all of your balance and power for all your punching come from.

A good beginner exercise is to get into a fighting stance and throw a jab punch while stepping forward. Once the jab lands follow with the rear cross.

Your foot should be in contact with the ground every time that a punch is released.

The training you are looking for should show you a proper fighting stance, how to move in a fight, the best way to hold hands, and how to actually throw a proper punch.

In the video below we show you how to throw a jab punch.

This is a great way to start working on your footwork.

There are many different videos and instructors that you can find online.

When doing karate at home, it is good to start off by stretching for around 5 to 10 minutes and then warming up the muscles.

You can warm up by doing sit-ups, push-ups, running in place, or whatever gets loosens up your muscles the best.

After that make sure to stretch so that you do not pull any muscles while performing the techniques of karate.

Once you are warmed up, you need to make sure that you understand the basic stances.

Most types of karate at least have a similar variation to these fighting stances:  walking stance, frontal stance, and back stance.

  • The walking stance is when your dominant foot points forward while your back foot is out at around a 45-degree angle behind you. During this stance, your feet should be apart at a “walking” width.
  • A front stance is very similar to a walking stance; however your feet are further apart, and you want most of your leg on your front leg.
  • Back stance is when you position your feet in a “walking” position and put all your weight on your back leg. Some people may raise their front heel while doing this stance.

There is also the ready stance which is not a fighting stance. It is when your heels are together, and your toes are pointing outward or parallel depending on what type of martial arts you may be learning.

The other important parts of karate are balance, power, and speed.

Being successful at karate requires a great amount of balance. The stances above require balance and to center your body so that you can be fluid and strong.
